DISCOVERING REFLEXOLOGY

When I was a teenager, my mother visited a reflexologist for her chronic back pain—and it really helped alleviate it! That made a lasting impression on me.

I started seeing the reflexologist, too. At the time, I experienced constant, low-grade anxiety. Reflexology brought my body into a deep state of relaxation—in a way nothing else had been able to do. It felt incredible!

It was like a breath of fresh air for my body. Tension melted away. I felt calmer, more present, and more grounded. At the same time, I felt lighter, as though weights had lifted off me—and I would enjoy a burst of energy that week.

I fell in love with how my body felt after a reflexology session. At just 16, I knew I wanted to become a reflexologist and share that same sense of blissful relaxation with others.

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?

Reflexology is a holistic practice based on the understanding that specific reflex areas in the hands and feet correspond with different glands, organs, and other parts of the body.

By applying precise intermittent pressure to these reflexes in the hands and feet using specific, unique manual techniques, reflexology shifts the nervous system into a deeply relaxed state—releasing bodily tension, and improving the functioning of body systems.

Reflexology is NOT a foot massage. Reflexology works through the nervous system—by stimulating the nerves in the hands and feet.

After a reflexology session, you may feel deeply relaxed, looser, and lighter. If your body needs extra energy for healing and repair, you may feel slowed down and sleepy. (A nap after reflexology can be a wonderful way to give your body more time to rest and repair!) If you're in good health and feeling well, you may leave your session feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and energized.

HOW CAN REFLEXOLOGY HELP?

By stimulating reflex areas on the feet and hands, reflexology helps support the body’s natural healing processes and promotes greater balance, relaxation, and well-being. Reflexology is a complementary practice that

Potential benefits of reflexology may include:

  • Reducing stress and promoting relaxation
  • Reducing muscle tension—including neck & shoulder tension
  • Supporting more restful sleep
  • Supporting healthy digestion
  • Improving circulation
  • Reducing and managing pain
  • Supporting faster recovery after exercise, injuries, or surgery
  • Supporting lymphatic flow
  • Easing PMS symptoms and menstrual cramps
  • Supporting the body during pregnancy and promoting relaxation in the weeks leading up to birth
  • Supporting recovery following a stroke
  • Improving mood
  • Helping clients relax and open up before a psychotherapy appointment
  • Helping trauma survivors

Reflexology is not intended to diagnose or treat foot conditions. Its purpose is to work the reflex areas of the feet and hands to support the whole body.

CLIENT WORDS

"Johanna helped me recover from a car accident that had a very significant impact on my body. After my first session with her, I knew I needed to incorporate her practice of reflexology into my healing as a ongoing accompaniment to other modalities.

I ended up being able to attend a total of five sessions before leaving the area, and was glad I did. Not only is the therapeutic approach she takes incredibly relaxing and transporting, it had a marked impact on my well-being and rate of recovery.

Her reflexology fundamentally differs from "foot massage" places that advertise reflexology in their names. It's as different as sewing vs. acupuncture. Both involve needles, but only one involves healing.

I found myself leaving sessions with Johanna exhausted and ready to sleep. After waking up, I noticed significant reduction in pain, headaches, muscle tension, and other acquired symptoms that manifested after the accident.

Johanna proves herself a thoughtful and caring healer. She takes time to explain why she's focusing in a particular area, and evaluates progress through patient feedback. She follows up. Takes notes. Carefully works through trouble areas over multiple sessions.

I truly don't understand the bio mechanisms behind reflexology, but I know that it helped me. Johanna is the best of the best, and I know she'll continue to help many people through her practice."

REFLEXOLOGY & TRAUMA HEALING

Traumatic experiences can leave the body in a prolonged state of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Trauma can involve a loss of safety, personal power, and attuned connection. Some trauma survivors experience hypervigilance, constantly scanning their surroundings for potential threats, while others may feel disconnected from their bodies or emotions. Over time, the effects of chronic stress can also contribute to physical tension, pain, and other health challenges.

Reflexology offers a gentle opportunity for your body to relax, reconnect, and heal. By supporting the body's relaxation response, reflexology shifts the nervous system away from a heightened state of alertness and toward the parasympathetic state associated with rest and recovery. Stress and tension reduce. As you begin to feel safer, it becomes easier to re-connect with your body and be more fully present. When the body is no longer focused primarily on responding to perceived threats, it can devote more resources to the processes that support healing, helping improve overall health.

As a Certified Trauma-Informed Practitioner, my intention is to provide a safe, respectful, and attuned space where you feel heard, your boundaries are honored, and your autonomy is respected. Before your session, I'll walk you through what to expect and offer choices to help you feel comfortable and in control, whether that means using an eye pillow or blanket or not, adjusting the music volume, or letting me know what you need throughout your session. And I always ask for feedback regarding the level of pressure I'm using in your reflexology session.

You deserve to feel safe, respected, and cared for. My trauma-informed approach is rooted in the understanding that each person's experiences, needs, and protective strategies are valid and unique and that everyone deserves to be nurtured with genuine care.

HOW DOES REFLEXOLOGY WORK?

Your hands and feet contain reflex areas that correspond with every part of the body. By stimulating these areas, reflexology provides sensory input through the nervous system that can help the body move out of stress and into a state of deep relaxation.

When the body is no longer focused on fight-or-flight, it has more opportunity to rest, restore, and support its natural healing processes. Reflexology may help release physical tension, support circulation and healthy body function, and leave you feeling more grounded, energized, and connected to your body.

Even though only the hands and feet are worked on, reflexology supports the whole body. You may arrive with tension in your neck and shoulders and leave noticing that those areas feel softer, more relaxed, and have greater range of motion—all from working the corresponding neck and shoulder reflex areas on your feet and hands.

YOUR PERSONALIZED SESSION

Before your first session, you'll complete a health history online so I can understand your health concerns, goals, and anything you'd like us to focus on.

During your session, I'll work the entire reflex map while also spending extra time on areas that feel tight, crunchy, or sensitive, as well as reflexes that correspond with areas you'd like to support—such as your back, hormones, digestion, or any areas of concern.

Some reflex areas can feel tender or sensitive. I always welcome your feedback and will adjust the pressure whenever you'd like.

All you need to remove are your shoes and socks.

Sessions are available in a variety of lengths for children, adults, and elderly adults:

  • Children & Elderly
    • 30 minutes
  • Adults
    • 45 minutes — feet only
    • 60 minutes — feet only
    • 75 minutes — both hands and feet
    • 90 minutes — both hands and feet, plus Reiki nourishment of the seven chakras

Throughout each session, as I do reflexology, I also channel Reiki through my hands, allowing it to flow throughout your body and energy field, supporting deep relaxation and energetic balance. I end each session with warm towels, optional sage smudging, and lavender oil. I use thoughtfully selected Weleda products and an unscented reflexology wax made with simple ingredients such as seed oils and beeswax.

WHAT'S THE ORIGIN OF REFLEXOLOGY?

While the practice may have roots in ancient healing traditions, modern reflexology developing in the early 20th century through the work of Dr. William Fitzgerald, Dr. Shelby Riley, and Eunice Ingham--who mapped the reflex areas of the feet and hands and developed the techniques that form the original Ingham Method of reflexology. Ingham is widely considered the Mother of Modern Reflexology.

Eunice Ingham taught reflexology for many years across the United States, and had students from all over the world--some which went on to teach and create their own styles of reflexology. Reflexology that is practiced in China today actually has it's roots in Eunice Ingham's teaching.

Eunice's nephew, Dwight Byers, created the International Institute of Reflexology (IIR) and continued her work until his passing in 2020 at the age of 91.
